Preparations begin for Tauranga by-election – Electoral Commission
The Electoral Commission is preparing for a by-election in the Tauranga electorate on Saturday June 18.
“Voters in Tauranga will choose a new local MP,” says Graeme Astle, national director of polling services. “If you live in the Tauranga electorate, make sure you are registered and ready to vote.”
The Tauranga electorate includes the city of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui and stretches southwest to Tauriko.
“Only those who are registered in the Tauranga General Electorate are eligible to vote in the by-election.
“As in any by-election, people have a vote for the MP of their electorate. There is no party vote,” says Graeme Astle.
Abroad voting will begin on Wednesday June 1 and advance voting will begin on Saturday June 4. Information on where and when to vote will be available on vote.nz from Tuesday 17 May.
The Electoral Commission plans to provide up to 15 polling stations during advance voting and up to 30 polling stations on Election Day.
People can check if they are registered with vote.nz. They can register or update their details online using their New Zealand driver’s license, New Zealand passport or RealMe verified identity. Or they can call 0800 36 76 56 and ask for a registration form to be sent to them.
