Moussa Diaby and Jeremie Frimpong rule Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen to winning start against Schalke

Moussa Diaby was involved in three goals, Jeremie Frimpong in scoring two, as Bayer Leverkusen started life under Xabi Alonso with a 4-0 win at home to Schalke.

Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 Schalke
Goals: 1-0 Diaby 38′ (pass: Andrich)2-0 Frimpong 41′ (assist: Diaby), 3-0 Frimpong 53′ (assist: Diaby), 4-0 Paulinho 90′ (assist: Adli)

Alonso was given the reins at Leverkusen in the week following Gerardo Seoane’s sacking after 2-0 and 4-0 defeats at Porto and Bayern Munich respectively. Although he only had a few training sessions with the new coach, Die Werkself looked invigorated and were particularly active down the right through Frimpong and Diaby. Although he found himself behind that side on many occasions, the chances remained limited, with Diaby hitting the side scoring the best moment until the Frenchman collected the ball from 30 yards down the middle, driving through the defense and exceeds Alexander Schwolow. from the edge of the box to launch the Alonso era. Diaby then turned provider three minutes later after Callum Hudson-Odoi burst through the middle, dropping to Frimpong to finish on the Schalke keeper. The visitors’ only chance was a harmless header from Simon Terodde late in the half.

The flow of play remained much the same after the break as Leverkusen dominated. They scored their third goal of the day when Diaby led from a break and slid past Frimpong with a defensive pass for the defender to slip past Schwolow and pocket his brace. There were no signs of the soft belly seen so far this season of Die Werkself as they viewed the game comfortably, limiting Schalke to just two attempts on goal without ever threatening. Substitutes Amine Adli and Paulinho combined to add the icing on the cake with a fourth on the break heading into the 90th minute. A maiden win for Alonso knocks Leverkusen out of the bottom three for the first time in three weeks. Schalke have now lost three on the tour and are back in the drop zone for the first time since day four.
