Compositions Orioles and Twins – Blog
MINNEAPOLIS — Trey Mancini is absent from the Orioles roster tonight for the second time in three games, as they visit the Twins on the final leg of their three-city road trip.
Mancini, who has an eight-game hitting streak, did not play Tuesday and the Orioles were absent yesterday. He went 1 for 5 with a brace on Wednesday.
Anthony Santander is the designated hitter tonight, with Ryan McKenna in left field and Austin Hays in right. Adley Rutschman is fifth at bat.
Jonathan Araúz gets another start at third base.
Spenser Watkins has a 5.14 ERA and 1.629 WHIP in nine starts, but he’s allowed just one unearned run in five innings at Chicago. He faced the Twins on May 5 at Camden Yards and allowed three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Byron Buxton homered.
The Orioles had the fifth-best record in the American League in June at 14-12.
Joe Ryan made 11 starts for the Twins and posted a 3.20 ERA and 1.119 WHIP in 59 innings. He faced the Orioles on May 3 and allowed two runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Sonny Gray (2.17 ERA) and southpaw Devin Smeltzer (2.88) start for the Twins in the final two games of the series. The Orioles start Jordan Lyles and Tyler Wells.
The Twins have lost their last two games and three of four but remain in first place in the AL Central at 43-36. They are 23-17 at home.
The teams split a four-game series at Camden Yards, with the Orioles winning the last two.
The Twins swept the Orioles in a three-game series at Target Field in 2021. The Orioles haven’t swept three games at Minnesota since 1999.
The Orioles need two wins to secure their first series win over Minnesota since going 5-1 in 2016. They’re trying to break a 10-game losing streak at Target Field since July 5, 2018, their last win by an 11 -5 points on July 9, 2017.
Major League Baseball made a scoring change from Tuesday’s game in Seattle. In the eighth inning, Julio Rodríguez reached first base and JP Crawford advanced to third on what was ruled a fielding single. Now it’s a mis-catch error on first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, with an assist to pitcher Félix Bautista. Both runs are not won.
